Best budget laser engraver under €500

By Grafline, a working laser & print workshop in Sežana, Slovenia · Updated 2026-08-22

Under €500 you are choosing between a 5–20 W diode and a bare-bones K40 CO2. All of them engrave wood well; the differences are cutting power, safety and how much fiddling you'll do. Here's what we'd buy.

Which one?

Engraving only: Sculpfun S9 or Ortur LM3. You want to cut too: Atomstack A20 Pro or xTool D1 Pro (buy the 20 W if you can stretch). You want acrylic: only the K40 — diodes can't cut clear acrylic, full stop.

The K40 deserves a warning: it arrives without usable air assist, with a tiny bed and sketchy wiring. Budget another €150 and a weekend. If that sounds like fun, it's the most capable machine on this list; if not, get the Ortur.

What cheap diodes really cut

At 10 W: 3 mm plywood in 1–2 passes (~4 mm/s), 2 mm leather, card, dark opaque acrylic only. Engraving on wood, slate, anodised aluminium, coated metal is excellent on all of them. Per-material times on a 10 W diode →

FAQ

Can a €300 laser engraver cut wood?

Thin wood, yes. A 5 W diode cuts 3 mm plywood in 3–4 slow passes; a 10 W in 1–2 passes; a 20 W in one pass at ~6 mm/s. None of them cut clear acrylic.

Is the OMTech K40 worth it as a first laser?

If you're comfortable adding air assist and tweaking wiring, yes — it's the cheapest real CO2 and cuts acrylic and 5 mm plywood. If you want plug-and-play, a 10 W xTool or Ortur diode is less frustration.

What's the safest budget laser?

Look for flame detection, tilt/motion interlocks and a lid or shield: Ortur LM3 and xTool D1 Pro have them; always wear the goggles and run an extractor.
