Best laser engraver for beginners in 2026
A good beginner laser is safe, has a community that answers questions at midnight, and grows with you for a year or two. These four do. (If you're starting a business, read the small-business guide instead.)

Budget for the extras
- Enclosure (open frames): €100–200 · Air assist pump: €30–60 · Honeycomb bed: €40–80 · Rotary (tumblers): €100–200 · Extractor/ducting: €50–150 · Goggles: included, use them.
Mistakes first-timers make
- Buying power you don't need — a 10 W engraves as well as a 40 W; power only buys cutting speed.
- No extraction — lasered MDF and acrylic fumes are genuinely harmful.
- Cranking power to fix a cut — slow down or add a pass. See why it won't cut through.
- Never making a test grid — five minutes that save weeks of guessing.
FAQ
What is the easiest laser engraver to use?
Glowforge (Aura/Spark) has the simplest software, followed closely by xTool's XCS. xTool gives you far more machine for the money and works offline.
How much should a beginner spend?
€500–900 gets a very capable 10–20 W diode (xTool D1 Pro, Ortur LM3). Add €150–300 for enclosure, air assist and extraction. Spend €1,500–2,000 on an enclosed S1 only if you already know you'll use it weekly.
Do I need LightBurn?
Not on day one — XCS (xTool) or Glowforge's app is enough. Most people move to LightBurn (~€60–120) within a few months for its control and it supports almost every machine.
