Wood — the default for a reason
Basswood (linden) gives the most even, dark engrave with almost no grain interference; birch ply is stronger and cuts cleanly for shapes; walnut and cherry look premium but engrave lighter. Mask with transfer tape on light woods to avoid smoke staining. Ideas: name signs, Christmas ornaments, coasters with logos, recipe boards, wedding guest-book hearts, photo engraving on basswood.

Acrylic — highest perceived value
Engrave the back of clear cast acrylic for an LED-lit sign; two-tone (laserable) acrylic reveals a contrasting colour; mirror acrylic engraved from the back makes stunning signage. Diodes engrave opaque and two-tone fine but cannot cut clear sheet — pre-cut blanks solve that. Ideas: LED night-lights, cake toppers, wedding signs, keychains, award plaques, earrings.

Leather, slate, aluminium, tumblers
- Veg-tan leather only (chrome-tan fumes are toxic). Keyfobs, bracelets, journal covers, luggage tags. Wipe with damp cloth after to remove soot.
- Slate gives a bright white mark at low power; seal with mineral oil for contrast. Coasters sell in sets of 4.
- Anodised aluminium — business cards, pet tags, wallet cards: fast, permanent, looks machined.
- Tumblers need a rotary; powder-coat burns off to silver. The classic Etsy money-maker.

What is the easiest material to laser engrave?
Basswood and birch plywood — forgiving settings, dark crisp mark on any laser including 5–10 W diodes, and blanks cost cents. Slate and anodised aluminium are equally easy and look premium.
What materials can a diode laser engrave?
Wood, leather, slate, cork, paper, anodised aluminium, powder-coated metal, opaque and two-tone acrylic, glass with care. It cannot cut clear acrylic and cannot mark bare metal without a marking spray.
What laser-engraved products sell best?
Personalised items with a cheap blank and a high perceived value: tumblers, slate coasters, wood name signs, acrylic LED signs, leather keyfobs, pet tags, cutting boards. Personalisation is the margin.
