Best wood for laser engraving and cutting

By Grafline, a working laser & print workshop in Sežana, Slovenia · Updated 2026-08-22

Wood is 80% of what hobby lasers engrave. The difference between a muddy mark and a crisp dark one is mostly the wood, not the machine. Here's what we use and what to buy.

FAQ

What wood engraves the darkest?

Basswood and alder give the darkest, most even mark; cherry engraves a rich brown; maple is crisp but lighter; walnut barely shows an engrave because it's already dark.

What plywood is best for laser cutting?

Birch plywood labelled laser-grade (void-free, low-formaldehyde glue), 3 mm for most work, 6 mm for structural pieces. Avoid construction ply — glue voids stop cuts and the glue can be toxic.

Can a diode laser engrave hardwood?

Yes — engraving is easy on any wood with a 5–10 W diode. Cutting hardwood above 3–4 mm is slow on diodes; use a CO2 for thicker hardwood.
