Air assist: what it does, and how much you actually need
Air assist is not an accessory for cutting - it is what keeps the flame off your work and the smoke off your lens. But more air is not always better, and the right pressure depends on the job.

Three jobs at once. It blows burning debris out of the kerf so the beam reaches fresh material instead of re-burning ash. It cools the cut edge, which is what stops charring spreading. And it pushes smoke away from the lens - without it, a film builds up in hours and quietly steals power. That last one is why a machine that cut fine last month suddenly needs two passes.
2. Aquarium pump or compressor?
A small diaphragm pump moves a lot of air at very little pressure. That is fine for engraving, where you only need to keep smoke off the optics. For cutting - especially wood, MDF and anything over about 3 mm - you want real pressure to clear the kerf, and that means a compressor. The usual upgrade path is: run the pump for engraving, add a compressor with a regulator when you start cutting thicker stock.
3. When more air makes things worse
On clear acrylic, high pressure cools the edge too fast and frosts what should be a flame-polished finish - turn it down. On fine engraving, a strong blast can disturb the surface and lift light material. On very thin card and fabric, it moves the workpiece. Air assist is a dial, not a switch: strong for cutting wood, gentle for acrylic edges and detailed engraving.
4. Nozzle position and aim
The nozzle should sit close to the work and be aimed concentrically around the beam. Off-centre air pushes the flame sideways and gives you scorching on one side of the cut only. If your nozzle is a generic cone, check the beam passes through the middle of it - a nozzle that clips the beam both scatters power and heats up.
5. Air assist and fire
Most small laser fires start with a slow cut, no air and accumulated debris under the workpiece. Air assist keeps a flame from establishing itself in the kerf. It is not a substitute for staying in the room, but running without it on a slow cut is asking for trouble.
Rule of thumb: If you only change one thing: put real air on your cutting jobs and turn it down for acrylic edges and fine engraving.

Do I need air assist for a laser cutter?
For cutting, effectively yes. It clears debris from the kerf, cools the edge and keeps smoke off the lens. For light engraving you can get away with a small pump, but the lens still needs protecting.
Is an aquarium pump enough for air assist?
For engraving, usually. For cutting wood or MDF above about 3 mm you want the higher pressure of a compressor with a regulator - a diaphragm pump moves volume but very little pressure.
Why does my acrylic edge look frosted?
Too much air. High pressure cools the cut edge and spoils the flame-polished finish acrylic gives when cut gently. Turn the air down for clear acrylic.
Can air assist make engraving worse?
Yes. A strong blast can disturb fine engraving detail and lift thin material. Match the air to the job - firm for cutting, gentle for engraving.
